Hi Frank and Richard,
My wife and I loved Chiang Mai and Koh Tao: the sea are beautiful Bay Mango. The downside is that access is difficult scooter, because the road is bumpy.
At the top 8 steps!

Yes indeed access to certain bays of the island of Koh Tao is quite difficult scooter: steep and rutted roads coast earth (especially after rain). But what a joy every time, each bay is different! And then there is also the taxi-boat option

Bangkok - Ayutthaya - Lopburi: Train
Lopburi - Sukhothai Bus and Train
Sukhothai - Chiang Mai: Bus
Chiang Mai - BKK: Plane with Air Asia
Bangkok - Sangklaburi, Western Thailand (up to the Burmese border): Bus and car rental.
Sangklaburi - Koh Tao: Bus and boat from Chumphon to connect via Koh Tao Koh Samui.
Koh Samui - Bangkok Air.
